I read this quote this evening via @JHarkin ‘s Blog ‘Give it some sparkle.’ I think the original text comes from from M. Booth and Associates, Inc. which was published in Reader’s digest. In any case, my thanks goes to Janet for making me aware of this wonderfully easy-to-remember quote; it ties in beautifully with the KISS anagram (Keep It Simple Stupid) Continue Reading

Economy, Learning, Marketing, Social Media4 comments

“…after 23 years of living I have learned one really important thing: life isn’t fair! If you don’t like the cards you are dealt with, do something to change them. And for some ungodly reason, if you are unable to change them, keep moving forward and don’t look back. All you can do is try.” < Inspiring.

15 Secret Tips for Building A Better Blog (by @blogbloke, 2009)

Blogging, Marketing, Philosophy, Social Media, Technology8 comments

One year on, has this changed @blogbloke

On the one hand it disturbs me how cut throat and clinical this approach feels… chasing the dragon, lacking in all empathy – on the other-hand perhaps that’s how many people have become, greedy, dishonest, clinical & obsessed.

Return to compassion and seek ways to rejoice in others talents.
Transparency trumps fake… and it’s way better for the soul.

Food for thought today…

Today I’m going to give you 15 tips that will show how you can build a better blog than your competition.
So here is the secret to building a better blog — all you have to do is promise a rags to riches story or that you hold the zen secrets to happiness and can show them how to get it.

With a little copywriting spit and polish you can spin them into the electronic age.

Take advantage of your magic genie Google and raid those old articles and faq files that are just begging to be plagiarized. Massage it a little, change the words around a bit and nobody will ever know the difference. (Well almost nobody).

15 Tips for a Successful Blog

It’s easy peasy! To create a popular blog today all one has to do is:

  1. Decide on a niche topic for your blog using Google’s Keyword Tool to find out what searches are popular.
  1. Using keywords for your chosen niche, get a cheap domain name and hang your shingle.
  1. Borrow a professional template from a real pro.
  1. Hire a real geek to make you a pretty banner and customize your theme/template if necessary.
  1. Spend $100 a year for WordPress hosting services.
  1. Go the library and/or search Google to repurpose (recycle) OBC (Other Blogger’s Content).
  1. Apply CMP (copy, massage, paste) to make it your own (kinda).
  1. Pretend you are an expert in your chosen niche applying the “fake it till you make it” principle.
  1. Get a referral or two from your pro-splogger pals.
  1. Learn a little SEO to game the search engines.
  1. Apply the art of link baiting for making kick-ass titles.
  1. Promise the moon and the stars to your readers.
  1. Preach good things will come to those who believe with all the fervor of an evangelist.
  1. Wallpaper your blog with ads. (Your guru will be happy to advise which pays best).
  1. Convert your plagiarized content into a book and ouilla — you’re a success!
That’s it in a nutshell.Read more at www.blogbloke.com

Wagons Roll! It’s Carnival Time…

Collaboration, Community, Compassion, Fun, Images, Innovation, Language, Learning, Marketing, Science, Technology3 comments

The time has once again arrived, time to venture into the wilds of Germany.

It’s carnival time peeps….

In time honoured tradition we’ll be touring six of the top fairs across the country. First stop is Darmstadt, the Heinerfest. It’s situated within the streets of the town itself, it’s a very beautiful town with wonderful parks. The festival runs from Thursday to Monday, with Monday being an extended weekend when all the businesses take their employees to the fair… gets pretty wild!

My father-in-law constructed this box of tricks in 1970; he still remains the leader in photography and shooting, his product and service are well loved and respected. I’ve helped him for almost ten years now, his apprentice so to say. He’s taught me about welding, painting, electrics, water, photography, rifles, electronics, transporting, caravans and the list goes on.

Simbeck’s Fotoschiessen has been photographing people surrounded by family and friends since 1950. Even today its a big occasion on a Sunday when the family gathers in their best outfits for the yearly photo (or 2 or 3 or more :-)  Grandad’s come every year clutching their precious photo albums, they’ve made a photo ‘every’ year for 50 years – an entire lifetime one year at a time.

In order to motivate people into a state of intrinsic joy something needs to happen; it needs to be challenging and it needs to be fun. Often when people arrive they bring the baggage of the day with them, we ask them to leave their worries and cares on the street and just relax, have fun and let us photograph the inner joyful you…

Doesn’t always work, but we do try hard!

As of Thursday I’m on the road with limited connection power (@eric – that’s why clipping from Opera Mini 5 would be so useful)… I’ll connect as time permits, but it will be a far reduced service until October.

I’d just like to say thank you to my on line communities – for being there, for sharing and advising, for laughing and joking and for helping me learn so much more about the things that really interest me – take good care friends and enjoy the warmth of the sunshine.

If you felt compelled to add a comment to my social reference, it would be greatly appreciated… http://sites.google.com/site/simbeckhampson/references-1

The Social Business Manifesto

• We will no longer view you as “consumers”. Instead, you are co-creators, participants, and advocates.

• We will actively listen, and participate authentically because we know you demand nothing less.

• We will meet you on your terms, not ours.

• We will provide value, not noise.

• We will evolve our workforce to meet the changing demands of a networked economy.

• We will focus on your needs vs. our messages.

• We will build relationships that connect us in ways where we all benefit.

• We will act ethically and transparently, because it’s no longer a choice.
• We will respond to changes quickly—we will adapt.
• We will move forward with you, not without you, because you are our future.Read more at darmano.typepad.com

Amplify: Recommend, Re-tweet or both? #amplifytheweb

Amplify, Community, Engagement, Marketing, Social Media, Twitter12 comments

Yesterday I noticed that Deidre @2knowmore_ RT ‘d a number of my posts, which I was really pleased about; it also got me thinking though. She could have simply recommended them, as most do, but by RT ‘ing them, with or without comment, they are sent out into Twitterland giving them a far wider coverage which also scores social media points and brings Amplify more attention.

My thought therefore is this – if it’s worth recommending to your followers on Amplify, is it not also worth another click to recommend it to your followers on Twitter too?

How to do you judge when it’s worth RT ‘ing?

If you guys have a problem with your privacy settings on Facebook go ahead change them and stop complaining.
I don’t see such a big deal in Facebook going more public,
Mark Zuckerberg is a visionary who deserves a huge amount of respect

Using Templates to Design Killer Blogs (by alibrace)

If your interested in getting some answers to the questions below then click through to the article… > It’s certainly true that how data is presented has a major impact on how we retain and learn… design and learning bumping into each other all the time :-)

“Pythagoras said that nature is number and if you apply that to data, at the end of the day, WordPress is just a load of data that you can manipulate and twist into wondrous things. I think what’s killing web design is lack of imagination, quite frankly.”

— Brendan Dawes, Creative Director at Magnetic North.

When setting up a blog for clients or yourself, it’s challenging to make a lasting impression with a unique blog. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using blog templates or CMS tools to help design blogs?

Are blog templates and CMS tools making designers lazy?

If you start with a blog design template, how can you customize it?

What do you think are some of the best looking blogs out there?
