HP On Customer Expectations

Clipped, Community, Engagement1 comment

Brave words.

We didn’t make the investments we should have during the past few years to stay ahead of customer expectations and market trends,” Whitman said. “As a result, we see eroding revenue and profits today. We need to invest now as a market leader from a position of strength, and that’s especially true because these businesses are not only under intense competitive pressure but are also under pressure from tectonic shifts that are taking place at the very foundation of the industry.

Understanding customer expectations is easier when opportunity exists for transparent mutual engagement; thinking about the science of social.

Are the insight he’s seeing too late fur HP? Can the HP brand shift over to these markets successfully? Once you see the opportunity it is often too late – or so the saying goes; sprang to mind in this case…

We need to move quickly to capture emerging opportunities in areas like cloud, security, and information management,” Whitman continued. “We’ve already assembled some formidable assets. Now we need to align our portfolio to deliver a new generation of capabilities. We see a once-in-a-generation chance to define the future of technology and position HP as a leader for decades to come.

This post has been inspired by a week full of educational emotions. On Monday I tweeted out about my pain seeing my young daughter struggling to cope with the overwhelming amount of homework. I must add that the small school she attends has a fantastic reputation and they really do care and work hard with the children, but they of course have their targets and performance criteria and grade sheets etc etc… Continue Reading

Communities of Practice by @egs

Written some 13 years ago, this description still resonates today – excellent.

CoPs (Communities of Practice)
Communities of Practice - What are CoPs? At the simplest level, they are a small group of people who have worked together over a period of time. Not a team, not a task force, probably not even an authorized or identified group. People in CoPs can perform the same job (tech reps) or collaborate on a shared task (software developers) or work together on a product (engineers, marketers, and manufacturing specialists). They are peers in the execution of “real work.” What holds them together is a common sense of purpose and a real need to know what each other knows. There are many communities of practice within a single company, and most people belong to more than one of them.

Tips for Writing Well

Guide for Writing

Without further ado, then, here are my Tips for Writing Well:

Keep it simple
don’t exaggerate
stand apart from your subject as much as possible
Watch your grammar
Vary sentence structures
Be clear on the meaning of the words
avoid cliches
The road to hell is paved with adverbs

That’s my simple guide for writing well. Of course, you still need to pick good subjects and you must know more about them than the average reader. Master these skills and let the rest of the world wake up to your contributions.

Did you ask a good question today? by @whatedsaid

Education, Engagement, Social Learning10 comments

Liked the opening analogy:

“Isidore Isaac Rabi, winner of a Nobel Prize for physics, when asked why he became a scientist, replied, “My mother made me a scientist without ever knowing it. Every other child would come back from school and be asked, ‘What did you learn today?’ But my mother used to say, ‘Izzy, did you ask a good question today?’ That made the difference. Asking good questions made me into a scientist.””

Did you ask a good question today?

Inquiry encourages students to be actively involved in and to take responsibility for their own learning. Inquiry learning allows each student’s understanding of the world to develop in a manner and at a rate  unique to that student. The starting point is students’ current understanding, and the goal is the active construction of meaning through:

  • exploring, wondering and questioning
  • experimenting and playing with possibilities
  • making connections between previous learning and current learning
  • making predictions and acting purposefully to see what happens
  • collecting data and reporting findings
  • clarifying existing ideas and reappraising perceptions of events
  • deepening understanding through the application of a concept
  • making and testing theories
  • researching and seeking information
  • taking and defending a position

The more we plan, the more teacher directed it becomes. If we have a very detailed idea in advance of where the lesson (or the unit or the semester) will go then it’s not  inquiry. What we do need to plan is really strong provocations to get students engaged in the big ideas, so that they’ll be motivated to question, wonder, inquire, explore… and learn.

The Value of Nothing by Mitch Ditkoff

I always remember an expression from up Norf…

“If in doubt do nowt”

;-)

The Value of Nothing

by Mitch Ditkoff

The Value of NothingWhen children are born prematurely, they are placed in incubators until ready for the world.

It’s the same with innovators — or should be. They, too, need to incubate. They, too, need to lay fallow. They, too, need an occasional day off — especially if the results they’re looking for aren’t showing up.

THE TECHNIQUE
  1. The next time you are working hard, but getting no results — notice it.
  2. Take a break.
  3. Breathe.
  4. If you feel the urge to produce, let the urge pass.
  5. During this time, notice the ideas that come to you — and write them down.

The book is a good read for anyone interested in learning more about how companies can leverage social technologies and tools to become, well, better companies. I asked Marcia a few questions to go deeper into some of the topics on the book, and here’s what she kindly had to say.

The only people who can own social learning are the individuals who themselves are learning each day, from one another, based on their work and in the flow of work. Read more at socialnerdia.com
